How to discover your business idea.
3rd April 2024
Discovering your business idea is probably one of the hardest parts of setting up your business.
You know you want to start your own business, but what could you do? Everything has been invented, right?
The truth is, you do not have to reinvent the wheel in order to start your own business. Most new business's are a variation of what has already been created. You just need to put your own spin on it.
In this artical, I am going to show you how you can discover your business idea by tapping into 3 things -
- Your experiences - life experiences
- Your career - skills from previous jobs
- Your education - skills from any qualifications / trainings
Brainstorming your idea
In order to decide what you want your business to be, first, I want you to get some paper and write down three columns, each with the headings as above.
Under each column, I want you to write down everything you know, like and enjoy eg -
Your experiences - Potty training, coping with ADHD, traveling with 2 under 2's, overcoming divorce. Anything that you have experience with.
Your career - Customer service, sales, marketing, leadership. Any transferable skills that you can teach or provide a service for someone else.
Your education - Any qualifications that you have acheived that you can then go on to teach someone else. EG. HR, Business Strategist (these are my two main qualifications).
You can have a business doing anything, just by using the knowledge in your head - Lisa Johnson.
Once you have some ideas written down. Now I want you to write down a problem or solution that you would like to solve.
Is there something that you feel really passionate about which you would love to be able to change or improve?
Is there something that you really enjoy doing, but you can't find anyone else that can do it the way you would do it?
Really have a think about this one. Once you have a problem or solution, then you will be able to see how your knowledge will solve one of these problems. Also, think about what other people come to you for. Is there a particular thing that people come to you for advice or help with? If it's a yes - then that is your idea!
*Remember it doesnt always have to be a problem - it can be a service or a product that would help your ideal client.*
Once you have an idea and your problem / solution, you have a great starting block to creating your new business!
